Distance Visual Acuity
  1. If patient presents with spectacles/contacts, check VA with correction. If no correction available, check unaided VA.
  2. Check VA in right eye by having the patient cover the left eye with the paddle.
  3. Ask patient, "What's the lowest line you can read on the chart without squinting or straining?"
  4. Record the lowest line that the patient can read at least half the letters correctly.
  5. Repeat test checking VA in left eye (right eye covered).
  6. Repeat test with both eyes open (this gives OU visual acuity).

Near Visual Acuity
  1. Repeat process using a Snellen chart held at 40 cm distance from patient


Documentation
The first box (Previous Glasses Correction):
  • Forward the manifest refraction from the last visit if returning patient
  • List date in Age of Glasses
  • When doctor performs Refraction, the prior manifest refraction should be synced into the automatic phoropter

The second box (Previous Glasses Correction 2):
  • Sync the habitual spectacle rx from the lensometer using Hab Spx2
  • List age of glasses
  • Record distance VA and near VA.
  • Checkmark glasses if wearing spectacles.
  • Select type of chart: Snellen (commonly used)
